South Bostonians will celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend with their 105th parade, the second largest in the country, and a breakfast roasting local state politicians.
Parade organizers said they expect 850,000 people to attend the parade, which will be held 1 p.m. Sunday and will last approximately three hours. The parade will begin in Gillette Park at the Broadway T station and end in Andrew Square on Southampton Street, spanning 3.2 miles.
Floats featuring clowns and 37 bands from Massachusetts, Canada and Ireland will sound their flutes, fifes, pipes and drums.
Among the bands are the 103rd Electricians Union, the Italian-American Band and the 501st New England Garrison, a Star Wars costuming fan club of bounty hunters, storm troopers and Sith lords.
Boston's Fire and Police Departments will lead the parade with emergency medical technicians, horses and motorcycles.
Boston Police are trying to curb drinking on St. Patrick's Day, parade organizer John J. "Wacko" Hurley said.
State Sen. Jack Hart (D-Boston) will host the annual St. Patrick's Day breakfast 10 a.m. Sunday at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and will have state politicians roasting each other.
