Study cites salary gap

Pay for BU female, male profs differs

After a Boston University Faculty Council study showed discrepancies between the salaries of men and women professors and between BU and comparable universities, Boston University President Robert Brown pledged last week to examine the issue. In an email to university faculty sent last Wednesday, Brown vowed to look into the questions raised by the report.

After College of Communication professor Michael Gee was fired this summer after posting inappropriate comments on an online blog, Boston University students are reevaluating what information to include on their Facebook.com profiles for the eyes of potential employers and administrators.

Through his local organ donation website, Dr. Jeremiah Lowney hoped to boost the number of living donors by providing a venue for donors and patients to meet, but many transplant centers nationwide refuse to perform surgery, citing ethical differences. Lowney created the website, MatchingDonors.

Politicians demand redistricting

Local political leaders and members of the Massachusetts branch of Common Cause proposed to create a seven-member independent commission of citizens to redraw the state's legislative district lines, in an effort to make the redistricting process more fair and democratic.

Starting this fall, the Boston University College of Fine Arts began offering a masters and doctoral degree program in Music Education online, which provides opportunities for music education thousands of miles away from the university's campus. The program allows graduate students to take classes online over a 16- or 24-month period, depending on the degree program they are interested in.

Students and faculty crowded the lobby of Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences early Monday morning to receive a free, health-conscious breakfast and kick off the Second Annual Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. "People loved the event last year so we figured we'd make it an annual thing," Sargent Public Relations Director Pam Powell said.

Used jean sale helps insulate homes

Polo Jeans Co.'s GIVE campaign solicited Boston University students to donate their used denim in exchange for new Polo jeans at a discounted price Monday on Marsh Plaza. By donating used jeans, students could purchase new Polo jeans and cargo pants for $59.
