A man attending the Kelly Clarkson Concert at Agganis Arena Tuesday night died after requiring medical attention at about 10 p.m., officials said.
Emergency Medical Technicians on site responded with CPR and defibrillation until Boston Emergency Medical Service transferred the individual to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room later that night, Boston University spokesman Colin Riley said.
“It’s terribly tragic, unfortunate,” he said. “But the EMTs did everything they can and I’m sure they’re very saddened that they weren’t able to revive the individual.”
Riley said the cause of death is unknown.
“These things relate more to the individual,” he said. “But the efforts are professional and often heroic.”
Ray Levy, coordinator of Emergency Medical Services at BU, said two EMTs, several Boston Police Department officers and a Boston Fire Department officer on site responded to the emergency.
This is the second such emergency at a large event this year, following the cardiac arrest of an individual at the BU Commencement ceremony, Levy said. That person survived.
Levy said EMTs cover all events at Agganis Arena, from hockey and basketball games to Sesame Street Live concerts.
“What’s important from our perspective is that we recognize it and respond to it immediately,” he said.
Riley said the EMT system at events is always ready to act accordingly.
“Fortunately Agganis has a terrific system in place, event lifesaving equipment, EMTs on site, able to provide emergency medical treatment in very short order,” he said.
