It's that time of year again. Yup, it's time to grab your green garb and head out for an Irish celebration second to none. Boston was the first city to bring the celebration of St. Patrick to this side of the Atlantic, back in 1737, and the tradition still holds strong. Whether you're looking for a plate of bangers and mash or a tall pint (or three) of Guinness, and you want to avoid a trip downtown, the luck of the Irish is on your side at four great campus-area establishments.
If you follow the rainbow to 34 Harvard Ave. you'll hit the pot of gold known as Kinvara. One of Allston's oldest Irish pubs, Kinvara is a great college hangout that features music, trivia nights, soccer matches and of course, Guinness. No doubt this spot will be hopping for St. Patty's Day festivities.
At the other end of the rainbow at 14 Harvard St. is Matt Murphy's. Just off the D-line in Brookline Village, Matt Murphy's prides itself on its "perfectly pulled pint" which, for those of you familiar with pouring Guinness know, can be a difficult task. With live music every night, you can immerse yourself in traditional Irish pub life at this small but lively spot.
If you're looking for a pot of gold a little closer to campus, check out O'Leary's at 1010 Beacon St. Known for its award-winning Guinness Beef Stew, O'Leary's is not only convenient, but delicious. With Guinness, Bass and Harpoon on tap you'll be doing an Irish jig in no time.
For the largest pot of gold in the area you must follow the rainbow to The Green Briar at 304 Washington St. in Brighton. Though it's a bit of a jaunt to get there, the trek will be well worth while. This year, along with traditional Irish music all day and night, The Green Briar will have Irish step-dancing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. accompanied by a live Irish bagpipe. A traditional menu including specialties such as corned beef and cabbage will also be featured. If you can't make it up for the celebration, be sure to check out the soccer matches shown each weekend. You'll be sure to catch some Irish brogue at this establishment. And don't forget the Guinness! m
