Following the current retro trend of bands such as The Bravery and The Killers, She Wants Revenge names '80s Goth and synth-pop acts, such as Depeche Mode, Joy Division, The Cure and The Smiths as influences. Singer Justin Warfield also cites hip-hop from 1986 to 1993 as influencing their sound, since it was "what we listened to growing up." In their latest single, "Sister," however, the British acts are more prevalent. With its Ian Curtis-like vocals, "Sister" sounds like an amalgamation of the Cure's Seventeen Seconds and Depeche Mode's Some Great Reward.
On tour for their debut album, She Wants Revenge will be playing at T.T. the Bear's on December 7. Although this is their first extensive tour, the band has opened for Bloc Party and played at various radio festivals.
"All we wanted to do was make a record and play it in front of people," Warfield said.
Perhaps the fact that their influences continue to make albums can be seen as an advantage. When asked about how it feels to be releasing an album in proximity to Depeche Mode, Warfield mentioned that he was able to work with Mode leader Martin Gore and, in fact, gave Gore a copy of their debut. The band is also signed on to Geffen Records - the same label as the Cure. When asked about the possibility of playing with Robert Smith and company, Warfield optimistically said, "Who knows? We might be able to play with them." m
