The fast pace, in-your-face attitude of New York City teamed with the meticulous work of CSI agents produce a lackluster spin-off not worthy of the DVD's $54 charge. However, if you've never watched an episode of "CSI: Vegas," it may be worth a rent.

"CSI: New York" loses the key element that makes the original series so appealing. It speeds through cases without fault and the evidence always falls into the investigators' laps.

Despite an obvious attempt to emulate the original, New York lacks the balance between quirky scientists and a blue-collar supporting cast. Instead, it's filled with hardheaded New Yorkers who assume that every suspect is guilty.

New York is out to shock and does so brilliantly, at least in the five minutes before the opening credits.

The seven-disc set includes 24 episodes, seven of which can be viewed with audio commentary, and a full disc of behind-the-scenes exclusives. The special features are worth a watch, but the DVD is not worth purchasing.
